NJ cities have some of the highest and lowest crime rates in the USA.

The annual crime rankings published by CQ Press are out.  These rankings are calculated from the data submitted in the Universal Crime CQ Press (Congressional Quarterly Press) has just published its annual report on the most dangerous and least dangerous cities in the USA.

Camden, NJ in 2008 has the dubious distinction of being deemed the most dangerous city in the country. Newark comes in at #29 and Trenton at #32. Elizabeth comes in 69th and Jersey City at 109. Camden and Trenton had crime rates that were among the top 10 cities that had populations between 75,000 to 99,000 residents.


Of the 393 cities ranked in the study, 234 had a crime rate above the national average. Chicago was a notable omission as data for it was apparently not available (probably a smart move on Chicago's part).

NJ was also represented in the lowest crime rankings by city with Brick at the 8th lowest and Toms River at #23. Edison and Woodbridge came in at #39 and #42 respectively. Other low rankings include, Hamilton (#46) and Clifton #94. Nationally 159 cities had a crime rate that was lower than the national average.Brick township had the 6th lowest crime rate in cities with populations between 75,000 and 99,000.


The rankings were calculated on the incidence in each city of murder, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary and motor theft.
