Dr. Brattsten teaches a one credit course for wine appreciation at Rutgers. Her course is so popular that she has had to restrict it to undergraduate seniors.
 
 

Biz4NJ takes great pleasure in introducing Dr. Lena Brattsten. The good Professor, in addition to all her accomplishments as Professor of Entomology (the study of insects) at Rutgers University, is also one of the regions most reputed wine educators.

Professor Brattstens wine related education (e. g. courses taken, tasting groups, etc.) includes a wide of array of regional, national and International learning/teaching opportunities. Among these are:

-    The AWS 3-year wine judge training in 1994 in Cincinnatti. She is an AWS Certified wine judge.
   
-    Served as chapter chair for the Central Jersey Chapter for 3 years, 1994  - 1996 and again since 1997. Organized and participated in each and every chapter tasting as well as tastings arranged by the North Jersey, the West Jersey, and the South Jersey Friends of Wine Chapters of AWS.
 
-    Attended “Grape Expectations” a 1-day Rutgers Cooperative Extension viticultural and enological symposium arranged by Dr, G.L.Pavlis.

-    Attended a series of seminars/tastings arranged by the Italian Trade Commission, New York, in the spring 1995; teachers included Mary Ewing, Ed McCarthy, Harriet Lembeck and others.

-    Attended tasting seminar series arranged by the Spanish Institute and Institute Cervantes, New York, since the spring of 1996; the teacher is Dr H. San Miguel.

-    Attended “Wine in American History and Culture”, Symposium at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC, May 10 – 11, 1996

-    Attended a Chautaugua short course “The Science and Art of Winemaking” taught by Dr Harvard Lyman, Stony Brook, June, 1996.

-    Attended Windows on the World Wine School taught by Kevin Zraly, World Trade Center, Summer, 1996.

-    Attended the AWS National Conference in Richmond, 1991, Rochester, 1992, Knoxville, 1993, Cincinnatti, 1994, Long Island, 1995, Hilton Head, 1996, Pittsburgh, 1997, New Haven, 1998, East Brunswick, 1999, Cincinnatti, 2000, Hilton Head, 2001, Buffalo, 2002, New Haven, 2003, Las Vegas 2004, Hunter Valley, MD 2006, Winston-Salem, 2007, Sacramento, 2008.

-    Participated in a one-week wine-study tour of Sonoma County arranged by The Tri-State Wine College with Dr John J. Mahoney as leader, Spring, 1998.
